Diamond Clarity

A diamond's 'clarity' grading refers to the number, size and visibility of the tiny natural imperfections and blemishes which it contains as a result of forming under immense pressure beneath the earth's surface.

Many of these imperfections are microscopic and will be invisible to the naked eye; they will not affect the appearance of the diamond in any way unless you are viewing them through a 10x microscopic lens.

Diamonds with the fewest, smallest and least visible imperfections will receive the highest grade, ranging from 'Flawless' down to 'Included 3'.

At Kensington Diamonds we stock 'Flawless' through 'Very Slight Inclusions 2' graded diamonds. We do not carry 'Slightly Included' or 'Included' diamonds in our supply chain, as we strive to only work with diamonds that are completely clean to the eye.

WHAT IS DIAMOND CLARITY?

  • image

    Flawless (FL)

The highest quality of diamond, no inclusions or blemishes are visible to a trained professional even under 10x magnification. So rare that less than 0.02% of diamonds will receive such grading.

  • image

    Internally Flawless (IF)

An excellent diamond with no inclusions - only tiny blemishes that may be visible to a trained professional under 10x magnification. These cannot be seen by the naked eye. Less than 3% of diamonds can be graded to such an exceptional standard.

Very Very Slight Inclusions 1 (VVS1)

An extremely high quality diamond, with tiny inclusions that will take a trained professional a while to see under 10x magnification. Impossible to see with the naked eye.

  • image

Very Very Slight Inclusions 2 (VVS2)

A very high quality diamond, with tiny inclusions that will take a trained professional a while to see under 10x magnification. Impossible to see with the naked eye.

  • image

    Very Slight Inclusions 1 (VS1)

A high quality diamond, with inclusions/blemishes that can be picked up under 10x magnification, but remain invisible to the naked eye. For this reason they are an excellent choice at a lower price point than VVS grades.

    Very Slight Inclusions 2 (VS2)

A diamond with inclusions/blemishes that can picked up under 10x magnification easier than its VS1 counterpart. Imperfections in the VS2 category are usually invisible to the naked eye.

  • image

    Slightly Included 1 (SI1)

Diamonds with imperfections that can easily be picked up under 10x magnification, and may be visible to the naked eye - especially in the case of larger carat sizes.

    Slightly Included 2 (SI2)

Diamonds with imperfections that are usually visible to the naked eye.

Most blemishes and inclusions in a diamond are so tiny they can only be seen under 10x magnification, therefore the clarity grading is the least important of the 4 Cs. Just ensure with your advisor that your diamond is eye-clean (meaning imperfections cannot be seen with the naked eye, which is generally the case with VS2 grading and above).

Once again there is no right or wrong level of clarity, it comes down to personal preference. An internally flawless diamond will appeal to some, while others wouldn't care if a diamond contained tiny imperfections.

Kensington Diamonds recommends VS1 graded diamonds - they are eye-clean, of an extremely high standard and retail at a noticeable discount on the VVS graded stones.

All engagement rings purchased from Kensington Diamonds come with an accompanying GIA certificate, listing the tiny imperfections your diamond contains and where they are located.
